Virginia county rules
Dinwiddie County, VA vacation rental rules and taxes
Dinwiddie County’s zoning has no short-term rental use; it lists “tourist homes” by right in the R-2 residential district and bed and breakfasts with a conditional use permit in A-2 and R-R. Stays pay 5.3% sales tax plus the county’s 8% lodging tax.
Checked against official sources November 7, 2026We read part of a third-party copy of the county zoning ordinance in November 2026. Confirm the rules with the county before you list.
What to do
Ask how your rental is classified
Ask Dinwiddie County Planning whether a whole-home rental counts as a tourist home or bed and breakfast in your district, and whether it needs a conditional use permit.Source
Taxes on each stay
Stays under 90 days owe 5.3% sales tax, and stays under 30 days also owe the local transient occupancy tax. Airbnb collects both on its bookings. If guests pay you directly, file sales tax with Virginia Tax. Dinwiddie’s lodging tax is 8%. For direct bookings, ask the Commissioner of the Revenue how to file. In McKenney, ask the town about its 5% tax.Source
